A laser diode is a current-driven device which is should not to be driven by a voltage source. Otherwise electrical
overstress may occur to the laser diodes as the operation voltage varies from device to device and additionally depends on the case temperature. Special care has to be taken, when switching the electrical power on and off, as transient currents beyond the maximum ratings can occur damaging the laser diode. To operate laser diodes correctly , a proper electrical driving mechanism has to be employed. A proper laser diode driver must be used to act as an accurate constant current source with good transient protection and very low noise.  Connecting directly to a voltage source like a battery will destroy the laser.
Warning there are many offers here on ebay for DC-DC converters and LED drivers sold as laser drivers which are very abusive to laser diodes and can significantly reduce the life or
damage instantly
laser diodes.
Here is the Pinout for the diode

This is a 5.6mm Diode
Datasheet
These diodes fall between 486nm to 492nnm in testing of 12 diodes out of this lot.
Wavelength Test
Diode #1 486.8nm at 55 mA
Diode #2 487.4nm at 70 mA
Diode #3 487.2nm at 55 mA
Diode #4 488.3nm at 130 mA
Diode #5 490.3nm at 120 mA
Diode #6 491.8nm at 100 mA
Diode #7 490.7nm at 80 mA
Diode #8 487.6nm at 110 mA
Diode #9 486.9nm at 100 mA
Diode #10 490.0nm at 95 mA
Diode #11 490.2nm at 100 mA
Diode #12 490.8nm at 130 mA
These results are specific to the SB308B292 bin which is the one I carry and can be confirmed by comparing the printed number on the top of the diode can as show below. If you source
elsewhere
be aware if this number is different the specs can be quite different. There are lower
efficiency
bins going around which are sourced at a discount and being offered as the same diode.
